A new employee, vehicle, machine, software subscription or rented space may support growth. But the decision should not be based only on whether the business can make the first payment.

Before approving a new monthly commitment, test it from three angles:

  • Profit test: Compare the additional gross profit expected with the full additional monthly cost.
  • Cash-timing test: Check when payments begin and when customer cash is likely to be collected.
  • Pressure test: Recalculate the position if sales are lower or collections are slower than expected.

An investment may still be worthwhile even if the early months are tight. The purpose of the test is not to reject every new cost—it is to understand the risk, funding gap and break-even point before committing.

Ask three questions: Will it generate sufficient profit? When will it generate cash? Can the business sustain the commitment if conditions are weaker than expected?

Test the commitment before approving it.
