A Single Month’s Figures Do Not Tell Management The Full Story.
Suppose an SME reports a profit of RM20,000 for the month. Is that satisfactory?
The answer depends on the context.
Management should compare the result with:
- The previous month
- The corresponding period last year
- The budget or operational target
- The year-to-date position
These comparisons can reveal important movements that a standalone figure may conceal:
- Revenue growth accompanied by a lower margin
- Expenses increasing faster than sales
- Profit falling below target
- Receivables rising despite stable revenue
- Different performance across customers, products or business segments
The purpose is not merely to explain historical figures. It is to identify significant changes, understand their causes and decide what action is required.
A useful management report should therefore help answer:
What changed? Why did it change? What should management do next?
