Financial reporting should end with management action.
Producing a monthly profit and loss account, balance sheet and cash-flow report is important—but the reports create little value if identified issues are not addressed.
A useful management review should convert significant findings into an action plan:
- Issue identified
- Likely cause
- Corrective action
- Person responsible
- Target completion date
- Result to be reviewed
If gross margin falls, management should investigate pricing, purchasing, wastage or operational efficiency.
If receivables increase, responsibility for collection and escalation should be assigned.
If inventory accumulates, purchasing patterns and slow-moving items should be reviewed.
The objective is to create a disciplined connection between financial information, management decisions and follow-up.
